Problem w/ Merged Id's populating in Marketing Efforts

Has anyone experienced a situation where merged records appear in your CRM marketing efforts? I have a person that had 2 merged id's that showed up 3 times in my marketing effort. I didn't think this could happen, seems strange and I want to know if there's something that can be done on the marketing effort side or do we need to create a query selection of merged id's to exclude in each effort (the latter seems even more strange to have to do). Thanks!
