Pass/Fail Grade Plans for Athletic Teams

Hello - we would like to be able to attach pass/fail grade plans to athletic teams, is this possible without having to build each team as an academic course??? BB led me to believe that I could do this by going to “extracurricular” -→ “sports and teams” -→ pencil icon -→ “grading tab”, and attaching a grade plan there.

But they just told me that's not in fact true, the grading tab for teach team only exists for report card grades only :/ Basically we need a way to add 5 credits for each athlete, WITHOUT the registrar doing it manually. Thanks!

@Taylor McBride: We are trying the same thing you are - adding a “credit” grade to athletics. We followed the same process that you describe.

I did some experimenting today. On Academics > Grades > Grading setup, in the left margin I changed the Group Type to Athletics, clicked View, and then viewed the fall grade plan for the athletic teams. I edited the start date to make the grade plan active today.

@Michael Morrissette may be able to tell us more about the status of the New Grading page for Athletics. I assume that what I did next is way outside what is currently supported.

I went to a team page. Although there is no entry in the tabs for New Grading, it does work for an athletic team. After playing with the URL, the team's roster appears. I can record grades. I verified that the grade is recorded correctly on Academics > Grades > Grades management (by class or by student).

FYI…my previous process for recording these credits was to use a shared spreadsheet that listed all students. The Athletics department indicated who should get a credit for a season. I then added those students to the roster of a section of a class named “Fitness Credit” via a data import. I then recorded the grade for each student in the section via another data import.

BTW…The reason that we're changing the approach is that (we hope) it will shift the burden from the assistant Athletic Director to the team coaches. We'll see how well that works in November.

Hi Brian…thanks so much for your reply…Taylor and I have been working hard on this. The piece we are still missing though, is are we able to make these P/F grades appear on the transcript, not just the report card?

@Kimi Nahigian - Yes, they can go on the transcript. (We choose to include them on an un-official transcript available to students and parents, but not on the official transcript sent to other schools.)

    Our transcript has three sections:

    • a section for Academic courses at the top
    • a section for the way we used to record fitness credits (an academic course using a different grade plan)
    • a section for the new way using athletic teams with a new grade plan
