Deposit vs Payment under the AR module

Hi Can anyone clarify the difference between a deposit and a payment in the AR module when applying payments to invoices? Thanks

    They have a symbiotic relationship : Deposits hold one or more payments. But you can't add a payment unless there is an open deposit. The Deposit has no value, that comes from the total of all the payments. Notice the Deposit only as DR, and the Payments only have CR. They are two sides of the same coin.
