Guidance on Using Solicit Codes and DNC Icons

Hi all,

We’re currently exploring the best way to implement solicit codes alongside DNC (Do Not Contact) icons for our outreach efforts.

Specifically, we’re trying to clarify how to handle these codes:

  1. For a "Do Not Email" solicit code: Should we add the DNC icon directly to the email address?
  2. For a "Do Not Phone" solicit code: Should the DNC icon be applied to the phone number?

Alternatively, is it better to treat solicit codes as rules for determining inclusion in queries, lists, appeals, and newsletters, while keeping DNC icons as standalone indicators for fundraisers considering donor contact? If so, why would you keep the contact number if it has a DNC applied to it, rather than delete and or mark as inactive..

Keen to hear how others are managing this to ensure compliance and effective communication.

Thanks in advance ?

Tash

@Tasha Mikoz I would opt for the option you listed as:

Very rarely do we mark the DNC on a specific phone or email. But there may be a solicit code of “no email” “no phonathon” etc. For us the DNC would be as you suggested - related to any calls by fundraisers/staff.

If they have requested absolutely no email we use the check box on Bio 1.

  • @Tasha Mikoz I use the DNC icon on emails more than phone numbers to suppress one that has been unsubscribed or bounced.
