Upcoming Action Deadline Communications?

Has anyone developed a clever way to send an automated communication to individual fundraisers when they have an action assigned to them that is almost due or past due? I'm new to RE and trying to come up with a way to remind fundraisers through their inbox when they aren't navigating to the action dashboard. Thoughts? Ideas?
