Questions on Hardware as You Prepare for Reopen?

Lately we are hearing a lot of questions around hardware and providing a touch free experience for in person transactions. While we have not yet released our EMV hardware requirements, we have a suggestion to mount card swipes to allow patrons to swipe their own cards. This has been tested and can be successful as your patrons are used to swiping for themselves at many retail locations. And these are the standard card swipes that cost very little and typically connect to your workstations via USB.
Another big component of the touch free transaction is scanning tickets or membership cards. These may appear on either paper or a device such as a phone or table. Our scanning and printing system requirements are minimal, so the most important requirement is for the scanner itself to be able to read the barcodes through glass or in “3D.”
We do not test or suggest specific hardware at Blackbaud but many of your peers have let us know over time what they are using successfully. There are many posts scattered throughout the community and on the Hardware tab in the community that provide information on scanning, swipes, printing and more. We have gathered a few here for easy reference!

  • How do we eliminate people having to sign their credit cards?  I called about increasing our limit - but was told it wasn't an option.???
  • Without EVM card networks still required that you collect signatures. With EVM here's how no-signature credit card transactions work for each of the big four card networks:

    American Express

    • Applies to all merchants who accept American Express worldwide
    • American Express says that in some jurisdictions, merchants may be legally required to continue collecting signatures. It also states that the program is optional, and merchants who wish to continue collecting signatures may do so

    Discover

    • Applies to credit and debit card transactions in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean
    • Discover says that some merchants may need to update their point-of-sale systems if they no longer wish to require customer signatures

    Mastercard

    • Applies to credit and debit transactions worldwide

    Visa

    • Applies to all EMV-enabled merchants in North America
    • Visa says the signature requirement is optional for EMV-enabled merchants. If you haven't yet upgraded your system to accept chip cards, you'll need to continue requiring signatures

  • Leslie,

I polled the team, area retail workers and other sources for this answer. Here are 3 suggestions that I gathered:

    1. Capturing signature protects you from chargebacks but is not a requirement - so you could choose to not do this altogether

    2. Create a "unused pen" and "used pen" area that allows your patrons to confidently use a pen to sign that is germ free

    3. Use branded pens and signage to indicate single use pens that your patrons can take with you

I hope these are helpful. We know that our museums are thinking through the very best way to provide touchless transactions and we are working to provide as much feedback as possible!

  • Does anyone have suggestions for wireless, Bluetooth barcode scanners? We have a large courtyard area outside our museum and would like to scan tickets and pre-check guests in before their admission time begins. We purchased a wireless scanner to test, but it does not scan the entire ticket UPC into Altru, only about the first 6 numbers -- this was paired with an Ipad. The scanner would not work with an Android tablet, and pairing with a laptop is possible, but we'd like everything to be as mobile as possible.
  • Sarah Osborne‍   I bought these for our organization last summer, they work great. I tried many others, this is the only one that didn't have any issues.

  • Hi All,

We've had success with these handsfree scanners:

They were pretty quick to just plug into a Windows laptop and start scanning printed tickets and eTickets. We were also able to use them with a usb extension cable to increase the distance between visitors and our staff.

    Thanks,

    Jesse

  • So, here we are in mid-September. What is the status of Altru and EVM chip readers??
  • So a year later, is there any more recent information about chip readers or touchless payment options for Altru? Would also love Apple/Google pay options for Daily Sales...We've moved our USB magnetic card swipe to a location where customers can swipe their own cards but it's hard to communicate with people which direction to swipe, and it's overall a frustrating experience. Given that BBM services are going up in price, it would be nice to see us getting greater functionality out of the deal.
  • @Anah McRae, everyday we get more requests to pay with Apple Pay or Google Pay. Where is Altru with touchless payment options? We are VERY interested. Thanks!
