Adding a credit card fee- has anyone tried this? What has been the reaction of your constituents?

My organization is trying to decide if we should add a 3% transaction fee onto all online sales (as altru doesn't have the option to make it optional- ugg).  Has anyone tried this? And if so, has it been successful/ what is the feedback from your constituents/ donors/ patrons?

We did this for our annual holiday light show. People did not seem to complain. We added the .26 sales order fee. We are located just east of Los Angeles, so it's not uncommon to see when attending an event.
