Welcome back Community!


We're coming to you with the first version of "The Buzz" in several weeks, and wanted to make this an exercise in positivity.  We're so thankful for each and every one of you who choose to spend your time here in Community.  Making this community an open space for exchanging ideas, best practices, and celebrating each other has been an amazing thing to watch.  Members of the Community have been reaching out to each other for help, providing advice, and connecting on an elevated level.


On a personal level, my family has been doing our best to focus on the positive things available to us.  My daily early-morning bike rides with my daughter have helped jump start my day as she points out every, duck, squirrel, and goose we encounter with glee.

    Since I can't get out to explore the world, I am exploring my sense of smell.    Candles have been bringing me joy!  I have tried making them (not too successful) and have bought several new scents from World Market online's store. Today the scent of Sandalwood/Vanilla was bringing me joy.

    I've been enjoying being able to hang my washing out on the line - a combination of working from home and the glorious weather we've had here in the UK - definitely a simple pleasure, but nothing beats the smell :)

    I've found lots of joy in taking a lunchtime walk each day.  It breaks up the day of "work from home."  Cold, rain, wind don't stop me.  I am enjoying the changing of the seasons and watching everything come alive!

    The outdoors give me joy; walking, biking, doing yoga in the great outdoors have been great. It keeps my body and mind happy and healthy. Also, I've been re-reading Palaces for the People which is such a powerful and compelling piece about Social Infrastructure - highly recommend.

    I've been writing letters every other week for my 3 year old nephew. They're so simple - just a sheet of printer paper and a Papermate marker in a bright color, and large block letter writing so he can follow along when my sister reads it to him. (Trying to help with the pre-reading skills since there's no preschool, you know!) I used to visit them every other week or so and we go on little trips together a lot, so I really miss him. He loves getting mail, of course, and I usually decorate the envelope with stickers and things. But what surprised me is the fun and joy of looking around for something I can tell him about what I see or do, and also that I can draw/trace a picture of. It's giving me ideas for sharing with our constituents via FaceBook, too, or content for a future mailing - so many of our clients are separated from their families even in normal times, and a handwritten note is a tangible connection that we can return to again and again.


    For this week's letter, I used Pilot FriXion markers to draw "invisible toys" for my nephew's invisible friend. They're meant to just be erasable markers or pens, but the effect is activated by temperature. I put the paper in my car in the sun to erase the ink cleanly, and when he gets the letter he can put it in the freezer to see the toys. It was so much fun to plan and think about his favorite toys that Miss Kitty would play with, too. It's like the old lemon juice invisible writing, but colorful!

    The nicer weather and being able to spend time outside has been wonderful! The trees have leaves and flowers are blooming. I'll occasionally even spend some time working out on my deck. And yes, I HAVE earned my new badge :-)
