Getting Started with Query in Web View
by Marie Stark, Nicklaus Children's Hospital Foundation
Query is one of the most widely used and useful features of Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge NXT®.
As you make the transition to using Query in web view, it is good to be aware of the changes in functionality and some useful enhancements.
Let’s start exploring these differences on the Query landing page in web view. Navigate to Analysis/Query.
Categories
In database view, the categories are on the left side.
In web view, Categories are on top in a drop-down list.
Other filter options are also at the top.
In either view, you can change the category of an individual query in Query Options.
Columns
To select the Query Columns in database view, you would right click and select the columns with the right arrow.
In web view, select the Columns button at the top of the page. Check the columns you would like to view.
You’ll find a clever new option to show a column for Favorites, allowing you to click on the star to quickly add a query to the Favorite queries tile on your home page.
New and Improved Features
These are some of my favorite new and enhanced features in web view Query:
Delete Multiple Queries
When deleting multiple queries, you now have the ability to filter by category, rather than having to sift through long lists of queries. It works much faster than in database view. In database view, you are required to scroll through a long list of queries without seeing what category they are assigned to.
In web view, you can filter by Favorites only. You can also filter by the user who created the query, which is useful when someone leaves the organization.
In order to delete multiple queries according to your filters, first set the filters on the query screen. You can filter by Category or select All categories.
You can also filter by Query type, Format, Date created, or Created by. You can specify any or all of these filters.
In the example below, multiple filters have been applied.
Add a checkmark to the queries you wish to delete, then select Delete.
When you confirm your selection, the screen will display a summary of your actions.
Selecting Copy will allow you to copy and paste the summary, as in the following example.
Query Name Deleted Message
Query of Imported Records18 Yes Query deleted successfully
02-15-19Credit Card Updater - Gifts Updated2 Yes Query deleted successfully
Query of Imported Records19 Yes Query deleted successfully
Processed : 3
Warnings : 0
Deleted : 3
Exceptions : 0
Options Tab
The Export Control Report in database view is under File/ Print Control report. In web view, you can find this report under Options.
You’ll find other selections like Soft Credits on the Options tab in web view as well.
Pasting Records
When copying and pasting multiple Constituent IDs or Aliases into a query, you can now paste 2,000 at a time instead of 500.
There is no longer a need to scroll down to the bottom of the criteria box before pasting.
Exporting/Sharing
Exporting a query in web view is limited to .CSV or .XLSX formats.
Note: In order to export a query, the user must be assigned to an Analysis role that allows Export in Query tasks.
There is now the ability to easily share a query instead of exporting results to Excel and emailing a file.
By selecting the Copy Link button, you can paste a link to either the query criteria or results.
For a long-time database user like me, old habits die hard. I’ve made a point of keeping up with changes in web view. Besides always reading “What’s new” on the Home Page, I read all the blogs and try out new features in order to learn them. I also sign up for Product Updates and attend as many webinars as I can about new features. Becoming familiar with these features will help us as we transition to the Unified View.

Re: Fund Splitting vs Financial Reporting – Looking for Practical Approaches
We use split gifts and I actually prefer it. However, if you're talking about how webview surfaces that in it's baked-in settings, then yes, you're going to need to adjust how you report, but it's really not too difficult! As Alex said, using standard reports should still be fine - especially if you are reporting by fund. They should be calculating correctly based on the amount you allocated to each fund for each gift.
I will admit that I never rely on the lists and dashboards in webview for our metrics or financial reports, as they do not count the way we would (we use either standard report that can use fund balance to not double count pledges and pledge payments made within the same fiscal year - all the built dashboards s in webview want to show you either committed or recieved revenue, and we need the correct mix of both for our numbers). Honestly, lists are not meant to be used for complex reporting - they are meant to be tools for fundraisers to quickly look at a group of records/see top-level information. I would not depend on lists for financial reporting. You can see that a gift in a list was split, but you're correct - a gift list will not show you how much was allocated per fund.
If we need really specific numbers per fund, I almost always use query for this (I learned RE in a system where because of an integration, it was impossible to get the info we needed from standard reports, so I usually default to query). When pulling this information from query by Fund, you need to always pull Fund Split Amount (under the Fund node) instead of the Gift Amount for your totals. This will break out the correct amount per fund. Gift Amount will always show the total amount for the gift, even if you've selected Fund ID (or description) as part of your output. Standard reports should also report correctly by fund if you've set them up to output by fund.
The only place this becomes a problem (and it's something I know I and several others are really pushing for them to solve) is if a pledge is split between funds. RE does not break down the pledge balance by fund amount, so if you need to know what amount remains unpaid on a split fund pledge, you have to calculate that manually. Depending on your split pledge volume, this is either manageable, or awful. If you're in the awful category, I suggest pushing for a process when split gifts are the norm, UNLESS it's a pledge and then you create two pledges - one for each fund. The pledge payments also calculate by the % in the pledge, an doesn't take into account how much the donor has paid towards each fund (so the pledge is 50/50 between two funds, if they pay off the total amount for Fund A in installment 1, RE will still try to split out installment two 50/50 between funds and you have to fix it). Again, this is the only reason I'd suggest not entering split pledges, but I have my fingers crossed that Blackbaud will actually fix this issue in the future.
I really like using split gifts because it makes it easier to communication to donors about past gifts (THEY remember writing you one check and that is harder to "see" if you've split the gift), it gives you an accurate count of total number of gifts for the year as well as gifts per donor and average gift amount (total gifts number is very inflated if you're entering all splits as separate gifts, and average gift amount is skewed). It's also generally how RE assumes you will behave (it's how the system was set up to work), and really with the exception of split fund pledges, it works beautifully.
Re: Gift Date Added from RENXT donation forms
The one date that accounting is stickler on is the GL Posting Date. This has to match the deposit/disbursement date. Before posting over the GL, I run a query to pull the NXT gifts by date, reconcile them to the BBMS disbursement report and then use a global change to mass update the GL Posting Date to the correct one. It has worked for us really well and this is a piece that I would have had to do whether using the NXT forms, Online Express or NetCommunity. For online gifts, the gift date and GL Posting Date are never the same date so we have always had to change them based on when the funds were received.

Re: How's Your Year Going?
I just marked 1-year cancer free! 🎉So 2026 is pretty good 😊 This was my second time around with breast cancer, and recovery has left me pretty fatigued - but I'm glad to be here and getting back to 'normal'.
Re: How's Your Year Going?
2026 has had it's ups and downs. I will skip the downs, but the ups are up-coming. We leave next week on a three-week vacay to Norway and the Arctic. I have told the cruise company that I want a refund if I don't see a Polar Bear? Who's been to the Arctic? Will I see a Polar Bear?
Re: Archiving Data Associated with Old Attributes/Custom Fields and Solicit Codes
I've done a lot of this kind of cleanup and very rarely archived it. Not a single organization regretted that method.
I have added notepads on occasion during big solicit code cleanup processes, to indicate that a certain code was removed on a certain day because of a cleanup or something like that. I have also exported attributes, reformatted them, and imported as a Note for posterity as well, but now that organization is coming around to deleting those notepads.
It really does depend on the situation, but if something was old enough to be removed from a record, it isn't needed. You could always export the information into a spreadsheet if people were really concerned about it.
It reminds me of saving clothes in case they come back into style / I lose or gain weight / I have the perfect occasion to wear it to / so on.
